The Spathiphyllum family comprises many varieties all natives to Central and South America. The most frequently found here is the Spathiphyllum wallisii, also called Peace Lily. Their common trait is unmistakably their lush green foliage and their splendid white spathes.

This plant thrives in humid environments. Therefore, it will appreciate being misted regularly, especially during winter months. It will bloom almost throughout the year, unlike certain other blooming plants.

MAINTENANCE

The Spathiphyllum talks metaphorically speaking: when it is thirsty, its leaves wilt. Since it appreciates humidity a great deal, its soil should always be slightly moist, but not soggy. In that case, its leaves will turn yellow and become sparser. But no need to worry, this plant is hardy; a good watering will do the trick. You will be surprised to see how quickly its leaves kick right back up when it has had a good drink! It is best to keep it away from direct sunlight though; medium to good indirect light will make it happy.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
