Portulacaria afra is an attractive succulent with a naturally branching habit and small, round, fleshy green leaves growing along stems that become reddish and woody with age. Its appearance resembles a traditional Jade Plant, but with smaller, more delicate foliage.

Easy to prune and shape, it can be grown as a compact houseplant, small shrub, or even trained as a bonsai.

Light:

Prefers very bright light and can benefit from several hours of gentle direct sunlight. Excellent light encourages compact, vigorous growth. Gradually acclimate the plant before exposing it to intense direct sun.

Water:
Allow the soil to dry completely or almost completely between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. As with most succulents, avoid watering too frequently.

Prefers normal to low humidity and does not require high humidity. Good air circulation and a very well-draining growing medium are recommended.

Good to know:

Portulacaria afra is commonly called Dwarf Jade, but it is not a true Crassula ovata Jade Plant. Its miniature foliage, reddish stems, and tolerance of pruning make it particularly well suited for bonsai training.
