The Platycerium, commonly called Staghorn Fern, is a type of fern native to dense equatorial regions and part of the Polypodiaceae family. In the wild, they will grow on any support which welcomes them. Very decorative, this sought-for plant is definitely an eye catcher!

Its spectacular foliage has the shape of a shield. Its fronds are grayish-green and resemble a staghorn, thus its nickname. The latter grow from the main frond. The pale duvet covering the leaves is not dust, but moisture sensors! It is best not to remove it. A shower will to the trick to clean the leaves.

MAINTENANCE

Unlike most ferns, the Platycerium requires good ambient light to grow indoors. However, it dislikes direct sun, which could scorch its foliage. It should be given a drink when its soil dries slightly on the surface. Watering will obviously vary depending on the humidity level of the room and the season. It will appreciate being misted regularly, especially during winter.

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
