Pachypodium lamerei, commonly known as the Madagascar Palm, is a spectacular succulent with an exotic and sculptural appearance. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm. It develops a thick, spiny trunk topped with long, glossy green leaves that give the plant its distinctive tropical appearance.

As it matures, the trunk becomes thicker and the plant can develop into an impressive specimen, particularly when provided with plenty of light.

Light:

Prefers very bright light with several hours of direct sunlight. Indoors, place it near the sunniest window available. Introduce it gradually to intense direct sunlight to prevent scorching.

Water:
Allow the growing medium to dry well between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain. Reduce watering significantly during winter or when growth slows. Its thick trunk allows the plant to store water.

Prefers low to normal humidity with good air circulation. Use a very well-draining cactus and succulent growing medium.

Good to know:

Pachypodium may lose some or even all of its leaves during winter or when entering dormancy. This does not necessarily mean the plant has died. When growing conditions improve, fresh foliage can emerge from the top of the trunk. Mature specimens can also produce beautiful white flowers, although flowering is much less common indoors.
