The Euphorbia tirucalli,¸commonly called Pencil Cactus, is native to tropical Africa and a member of the immense Euphorbiaceae family comprising over 2,000 species. It stands out with its soft green, upright and extremely ramified growth habit.

The Euphorbia tirucalli may give you the impression of being part of the cacti family, but no! It is in fact a succulent. Cactaceae yield duvet-looking areoles, from which grow needles and flowers. The Euphorbia tirucalli will produce a countless number of slender stems, at the end of which will sprout small green leaves.

MAINTENANCE

To be happy inside, the Euphorbia tirucalli requires direct sun for at least 4 hours daily. Ideally, position it near a window facing south or west. It will need to be watered when its soil is completely dry from top to bottom, which could correspond to every 4 to 6 weeks depending on the season and the humidity level of the room. Here is a little tip to determine if it is the case: delicately insert a thin wooden stick all the way down to the bottom of the pot. If the stick is wet or damp as you pull it out, your Euphorbia tirucalli does not need a drink just yet!

When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
