The Venus Flytrap is one of the most fascinating carnivorous plants. Its leaves develop specialized traps that can quickly close when a small insect triggers the sensitive hairs inside.

With plenty of light, some traps can develop beautiful red colouring inside, making this unusual plant even more striking.

Light:

Requires very bright light and benefits from several hours of direct sunlight each day. Excellent light encourages strong growth and attractive trap coloration. Gradually acclimate the plant to intense direct sunlight.

Water:
Keep the growing medium consistently moist during active growth. Use only rainwater, distilled water, or very low-mineral demineralized water. Mineral-rich tap water can gradually damage the plant. Keeping a small amount of water in a saucer beneath the pot works particularly well during active growth.

Generally adapts well to normal household humidity when provided with adequate water and light. Good air circulation is preferable, and a closed terrarium is not necessary.

Good to know:

Avoid triggering the traps for fun. Closing requires energy, and each individual trap can only close a limited number of times. Manual feeding is generally unnecessary when the plant has occasional access to small insects. Never use conventional fertilizer directly in its growing medium.

Venus Flytraps also experience a natural winter dormancy. During this period, growth slows considerably and some traps may turn black and die before new growth resumes.
