CYCLAMEN (colors may vary)
Taking care of Cyclamen (a popular flowering plant known for its beautiful, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant flowers) is relatively simple, but it does require some specific care to thrive. Here’s a guide to help you care for your cyclamen:
Light
- Cyclamens thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and flowers.
- A windowsill with eastern or western exposure is ideal.
- Too little light can result in leggy growth and fewer blooms.
Watering
- Watering is one of the most important aspects of cyclamen care. The plant prefers moderate watering, but it’s important not to overwater.
- Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure that the soil is moist but never soggy.
- Always water at the base of the plant, avoiding getting water on the leaves or flowers, as this can lead to rot.
- During the dormancy period (spring and summer), reduce watering significantly, allowing the plant to dry out.
Humidity
- Cyclamens prefer moderate humidity. If the air in your home is dry (common in winter), increase humidity by placing the plant on a tray with pebbles and water or using a humidifier.
- Avoid misting the plant directly, as moisture on the leaves can promote fungal diseases.
Fertilizing
- During the growing season (typically in fall and winter when the plant is blooming), feed the cyclamen every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Avoid fertilizing during the plant's dormant phase (spring and summer) when growth slows down.
Repotting
- Cyclamens don’t need frequent repotting. If the plant becomes too large for its pot or if the soil becomes compacted, it may need to be repotted.
- The best time to repot is after the dormancy period ends (typically late summer or early fall).
- Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one, ensuring it has drainage holes.
