Begonia maculata
Begonia maculata
Native to Central and South America, the Begonia maculata is part of the Begoniaceae family. It is also called Cane-Stemmed Begonia given the upright growth and appearance if its stems, which resemble that of the bamboo.
Its foliage is persistent, wavering between bright or emerald green, speckled with white and silver dots. Its blooms are long lasting and renew themselves from spring to the end of summer. A unique decorative element for any luminous room!
MAINTENANCE
The Begonia maculata appreciates good ambient light, even medium light, but dislikes direct sun, which can scorch its foliage. Like the Spathiphyllum, it will notify you when it needs a drink: its leaves wilt when it is thirsty. Therefore the soil should not dry up too much between waterings. To stimulate its blooms, just remove the flowers by pinching them delicately with your fingers once they wilt.
When you take possession of your plant, make sure you assess its watering needs. Before you give it a drink the first time, check the soil’s moisture level to verify whether or not it is moist near the surface. It is best to aerate the soil before the initial watering since it is often compacted to avoid shifting during transit. This also allows it to breathe and release moisture.
Rotate your plant periodically in order to encourage an even growth. Cleaning the leaves regularly will stimulate proper photosynthesis. As you wipe the foliage, inspect the leaves on either side to make sure there are no pests.
